I think the definition of independence varies with age. Children often want to be independent, but they have no concept of consequences. As parents, we must decide what is safe, while at the same time, letting them explore their surroundings and try new things. As adults, our independence is limited by our relationships. No one can be completely independent because human beings rely on each other. That's how the Lord made us. Romans 14:7 says that we do not live, or die to ourselves. The poet, John Donne said "No man is an island". That said, the day to day mundane tasks such as self care should be taught to every person regardless of handicap if possible. It is important for self worth to be able to function as an autonomous creature when necessary.
